CommCore welcomes Thomas Van Melkebeek as our spring intern. Thomas is a senior at Vrije Universiteit in Brussels, Belgium, and is currently majoring in Communication Science with a minor in Media, Politics and Journalism.
What are three words you would use to best describe yourself?
Persistent, dedicated and driven.
Why did you choose to intern at CommCore?
In general, the opportunity to intern at a crisis communication consulting group sounds like an extremely effective and engaging opportunity to learn hands-on experience. Therefore, ever since I first learned about CommCore, I have been really excited about it. Due to its years of experience, impressive client list, positive press, and highly qualified employees, Commcore was a no brainer for me.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was also really happy to discover that CommCore continues to provide professional services in the virtual world- which shows adaptability and resourcefulness. These are qualities that I value in a company.
What are you most passionate about?
Self-improvement in my personal and professional life. I am someone who is constantly looking for new opportunities and ways to push my own boundaries. Growing up, I have always been motivated to pursue unconventional goals and therefore had to put in extra effort. The more challenging these goals are, the more inclined I am to pursue them. In relation to this, I am a firm believer that people constantly have to reinvent themselves and have to adapt to new challenges because that’s the only way we can move forward. Lastly, I love devising branding and social media strategies — especially seeing the final product, I find it very rewarding.
What is your favorite social media outlet?
For news updates I prefer Twitter, while I still use Messenger as the primary way to communicate with my friends. For more fun and relaxing content I shift to TikTok. Although I’m not an active user/content creator, I think it’s a great new platform to give people exposure since the algorithm works different than Instagram’s. For example, small artists or content creators can go viral overnight. Especially during quarantine, TikTok has become a global phenomenon among Gen-z and younger crowds, so I’m interested to see where this platform is headed towards, and if it will dethrone the popular Facebook and Instagram social media platforms.
What do you hope to get involved with at CommCore?
I am really excited to work on improving my writing skills on a professional level and to gain more experience. I also hope to learn more about crisis communication and PR in general to expand my communication portfolio. Lastly, I hope to help CommCore gain more exposure online and improve their online presence.
