February 2024

As an intern at CommCore, I had the opportunity to observe a Briefing Skills Training conducted by Senior CommCore Consultant, Michael Sigman. The day-long session proved to be an enriching experience.

The initial segment of the training delved into the fundamental aspects of presenting oneself professionally. Attendees were treated to a comprehensive guide, providing a wealth of information on key elements essential for effective virtual communication. This included practical insights on optimizing lighting, configuring video setups, addressing audio considerations, and adhering to appropriate attire standards, particularly crucial for presentations and briefings conducted over platforms like Zoom.

The training also offered practical tips that can significantly enhance their communication skills. As an intern, I found this experience to be invaluable, providing a structured approach to mastering the essentials of professional communication. The insights gained during this session will contribute positively to my professional development in various work settings.

In a segment I found most resourceful, Sigman emphasized a core principle termed the “Three C’s,” stressing the vital significance of clarity, conciseness, and the maintenance of clear communication as an immensely impactful approach across various settings.

Expanding upon this informative workshop, Sigman taught the “PREP” formula for effective communications. Within this session, participants delved into four distinct subjects. The ‘P’ urged them to define their Position, Point, and/or Purpose regarding specific topics or issues. ‘R’ focused on Reasons, ‘E’ incorporated Examples, and the ultimate ‘P’ encapsulated Planning and Reemphasizing the Position. This strategic framework guided participants in formulating next steps after the presentation.

The central theme resonating from this training session highlighted the critical need for adaptability in today’s professional landscape. As Sigman adeptly navigated participants through the intricacies of virtual communication and briefing skills, it became clear that flexibility and a nuanced understanding of hybrid work dynamics are paramount in the constantly evolving modern workplace. This session not only imparted theoretical knowledge but also underscored the practical skills necessary for success in a dynamic professional environment.
