Today CommCore, the Media Training Company, celebrates the 2nd annual International Fact-Checking Day. Started last year by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a school for journalism in St. Petersburg, FL, the day is intended to raise awareness to the accuracy of what we read, and especially of what we share.
Since last year’s inaugural day, several media institutions have joined the campaign: The Washington Post, CNN, and Sky are a few. Hash tags such as #FactCheckit and #FactCheckingDay! have sprung up. Teachers in more than 50 countries around the world downloaded “The Lesson Plan,” a role-playing card game and online course designed for college students to teach how to recognize “fake news.”
As a Media Training and Crisis Communications firm, CommCore employs several former journalists. While we sometimes hated the editorial review process for our articles and feature pieces, we more than ever appreciate Poynter’s celebration of facts and getting it right. We applaud the British Government for examining the issue through a Parliamentary Committee of the UK Government, the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.
In honor of Fact Checking Day, we encourage all readers to fact check and spell check and follow the maxim of Sergeant Friday from the TV Show Dragnet. “Just the facts.”
