Today we interviewed CommCore CEO, Andy Gilman, about his experience as a keynote speaker over the years:
What topics are you frequently asked to speak about?
My favorite is a speech on how to develop and deliver a great speech. I also get asked to speak about Crises we have worked on and lessons for upcoming crisis. I also speak on how Communications Skills are part of Language of Leadership.
What do you think is a valuable aspect to being in the audience of one of your speaking engagements?
Most audiences have three questions when they listen to a speaker: So What? Who Cares? And What’s in it for Me (WIIFM)? I try to make sure each speech has “take away” points for the audience.
What is your favorite part about speaking at conferences?
Q&A. It’s only during the Q&A that you can find out whether you have hit the target with your audience.
How do you transform an event into something deeply meaningful for the audience?
Make sure you hit the WIIFM factor. If people remember one or two points the next day, you have probably nailed the WIIFM.
Is there an event or a time that sticks out in your mind as a particularly exciting or special speaking engagement that you’ve done?
The first year after college, I was a regional campaign manager for a US Senate candidate. I had to introduce a popular musician to an audience of 1,000 fans AND also ask for contributions to the candidate. I survived, kept my talk short and sweet and also raised money for the candidate.
CommCore practices what we preach. Our senior team loves to speak in front of small groups and in “big tent” forums. If you want to engage a CommCore speaker, go visit our booking site for more information
